How to wire a 240v air compressor diagram
Wiring 220 V air compressors and control switches: When wiring a standard 240 V motor for equipment such as air compressors, there are only two 220/240 V insulated wires and a separate ground wire.
Find out about grounding wires for 220/240 V circuits.
Electrical question: Where should I connect the white neutral wire in my 220V air compressor distribution panel?
I have added a subpanel to my main fuse box.
I have 4 wires going to the subpanel.
Based on your wiring diagram, I'm sure this part is fine.
I am connecting the 3 wire to the 4 wire dryer which is easy.
My specific question is.
I have a 220 volt air compressor with only three wires.
Do I connect the white neutral wire to the neutral wire or the ground wire on the bottom panel?
I thought the neutral would be the safer option in case something bad happened, but I have gotten conflicting answers from other sources.
Thanks for your help, Brad.

220 volt air compressor wiring.
Use: Circuit for a 220 volt air compressor with three wires.
Difficulty level: intermediate to advanced. This electrical project is best done by a licensed electrical contractor or registered electrician.
Tools needed: Basic electrician's hand tools and a voltage tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal experience, ability to use tools and access to air compressor circuits and electrical junction boxes.
Note: The air compressor circuit must be identified, disconnected and marked before work is performed on the 220 volt air compressor wiring.
240-volt air compressor circuit
Air compressor circuit size
The circuit size depends on the size of the air compressor and the motor horsepower. The compressor manual will indicate the power supply required. For most larger air compressors, a separate circuit is required. A dedicated circuit provides sufficient power to the unit to prevent tripping circuits used by other equipment or tools.
220 volt air compressor ground wire.
Brad, I understand what you are saying and many people are confused about this issue. This is because on a normal 240 volt motor, such as an air compressor, there are only two insulated 220/240 volt wires and a separate ground wire.
Neutral wire and circuit for 220/240V appliances.
These types of 220-volt appliances do not need a neutral wire.
New 240-volt circuits for kitchen appliances, such as rice cookers and clothes dryers, require separate insulated neutral and ground wires, since these new appliances have 120-volt control circuits.
This does not yet apply to 220/240 V compressors.
This may change with the advent of new control circuits for almost everything.
The air compressor ground wire connects to a separate ground terminal block that connects to the electrical system ground.
As with any circuit, the ground conductor is the most important conductor in the circuit when properly installed, as it helps protect the equipment and the user in the event of a short circuit or power failure.

Part number: Air compressor circuit breaker: 220 volt, 20 amp, 2-pole.
For example, I have found that a 20-amp, 220-volt, 2-pole breaker works very well as an air compressor breaker, as described in this electrical article.
