What should you use to check the voltage in the ballast
The lamp ballast ignites the vapor inside the lamp. Depending on the type of ballast used, the lamp either ignites immediately or takes a few seconds to reach full brightness. Newer lamps and ballasts feature quick-start technology, in which a small internal transformer generates enough current to heat the filament inside the lamp. If the bulb does not light after sufficient warm-up time, check the ballast before replacing the entire bulb.
Step 1
Check the circuit breaker to make sure the lamp has power. If the circuit breaker trips, reset it and replace the blown fuse. If you are testing a portable fluorescent lamp, plug in another fixture to check that the socket is working properly. If there is no power to the other fixture, have an electrician check the outlet.
Step 2 Ground the ballast
Ground the ballast according to the instructions in the owner's manual or installation guide. This is usually done by connecting a ground wire to the screw on the metal part of the ballast. For portable fixtures, always use a three-prong plug.
Step 3: Check the bulb and replace it.
Inspect the bulb and replace it if you find any burnt or blackened areas. If you are installing a tubular fluorescent bulb, make sure that the pins on both ends make contact with the ballast socket. Use only bulbs that fit the ballast and have the correct wattage.
Step 4
Turn off the circuit breaker or disconnect the power cord from the ballast. Tighten all wire connections with a screwdriver and check their condition. If the wires are cracked or frayed, replace them. Remove any debris from the connections with a brush. Plug the lamp back into the outlet or turn on the circuit breaker to restore power.
Step 5 Check the ballast voltage with a brush.
Check the ballast voltage with a multimeter. Connect the multimeter leads to the sockets at both ends of the ballast. If the reading is not between 5 and 9 volts, replace the ballast. Set the multimeter to measure the frequency and if the reading is not between 20 and 50 kHz, replace the ballast.
