How many ohms should a hot water heater element read
There are many cases where a homeowner may suspect that there is a problem with the resistance of their electric water heater: the heater is on, but there is no hot water or the water is not as hot as it used to be. Read on to learn how to find, remove and test the resistance of an electric water heater with a multimeter.
It is important to know that only electric water heaters have resistance. Gas water heaters burn natural gas or propane to heat water. If your gas water heater stops working, check the test light and relight it.

Water heater resistance check.
Most modern electric water heaters have two heating elements: one at the top and one at the bottom. Older or smaller electric water heaters may have only one heating element. Water heater elements have a relatively short service life. They may also be weakened by mineral deposits in the water. To check the heating elements of your electric water heater, you first need to find them.
Here's how to find your water heater's components.
Locate the water heater circuit breaker on your electrical panel and turn it off.
Locate the metal plate attached to the side of the water heater and remove it. There should be one plate per heating element.
Remove the insulation from the inside of the metal plate. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.
Look for a round or hexagonal object with a plastic plate on top, held in place by two screws. This is the heating element.
Now that you have found the resistor, you can test it. Here's how to test the resistor with a multimeter.
Turn on the multimeter and set it to the lowest possible ohms setting (the Ω-ohms symbol looks like an inverted horseshoe). This setting allows the multimeter to measure the resistance of the resistor.
Unscrew one of the resistor screws and disconnect the leads (it doesn't matter which one).
Touch one probe of the multimeter to the loose screw. Touch the other probe to the other screw attached to the front of the resistor.
If the resistor is working properly, the multimeter should read between 10 and 30 ohms. If the reading is very low or zero, the resistor is not working and should be replaced.
If your water heater has two heating elements, check the second element in the same manner.
Reconnect the wires, replace the insulation and replace the metal cover.
If the heating elements appear to be in good condition but you are still having problems with hot water, then it is time to call your local Mr Rooter dealer for professional assistance.
