How to measure dwell angle with a multimeter
Before you begin, there are a few important things to remember to ensure your safety.
When working on electrical systems, always assume that everything you touch may be electrically charged.
Before starting work, disconnect the battery and check the voltage with a multimeter.
Pay attention to the position of the battery and its terminals: an accidental short-circuit between the positive and negative terminals could cause damage or injury (especially cuts to the extremities).
When working in the engine compartment with the engine running, be aware of possible pinch points and keep away from them.
Belts and pulleys.
Radiator fans are important
Important: Rotating equipment can start or stop without warning.
Keep away from coolant hoses, exhaust manifolds and other possible heat sources.
Dwell time measurement
Set the multimeter to dwell mode.
Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the battery or to another good ground. If you do not have access to the battery, you can use most bare metal surfaces or look for a cable bolted to the body or frame somewhere; this may be a specific ground point.
Connect the red wire to the negative (-) terminal of the coil or ignition switch.
Note: On older vehicles with positive ground wires, reverse them.
Press the range button to select the number of cylinders.
